Frustrated when we think of ourselves too highly: Someone whose buttons you could always push would be a wimp. Someone who did not always budge when you engaged him would be his own man. In full compliance from the former or in a challenging communication with the latter, which of these two could bestow upon you the greater respect?

A theory of art

Interest is not in what you see. It’s in what you don’t see. It is sensed incompleteness completed reflexively by the spectator. It is a conflict in the otherwise imperceptible feeling that a sensory organ is “inadequate” … a mastery of scratching irritations, an “I” … “the” I.
