Suffering is always involved, but it is not in itself proof of an advance toward efficient thinking.  Comfort on the other hand contradicts the claim sooner or later.  Quite easily.

Moderation must be more difficult to endure than suffering, else there would be more of the moderate.

There is only one thing more miserable than learning the "hard way" and that is not learning the hard way.

If a society faces the choice between stability and creativity, why wouldn’t I?

It is never a happy prospect to hook your mind to the iron wire of necessity.  It can only be a happy consequence.
