Without rest there is nothing genuine, a human strategy, aphorism 479

479

Without rest there is nothing genuine. All attempts to muster up that last drop of energy get that drop but leave the cup empty. Now, I only mimic the pouring out and begin to question the need for the cup. Only overflowing proves genuine. I can train myself to fill and pour over. To remove myself from the metaphor and approach the clinical, let me say that energy and reflex are what we formerly called “the genuine.” It is physiological, not ethical. I can train myself toward it: an intentional repetition toward the unintentional reflex ... a new “spontaneity” that is not more disappointing than the old “spontaneity” — since we now have a little more control.
